I had a chance to discover Al-Turaif District when visiting Saudi Arabia - a marvelous location where history "lives". I was fascinated & inspired by simple shapes, decorative motifs, colors so than the series of new artworks was created dedicated to the unique historical landmark.
Al-Turaif District located in Diriyah or Ad-Dir’iyah - was the first capital of the Saudi Dynasty, in the heart of the Arabian peninsula, northwest of Riyadh. Al-Turaif is known as one of the largest clay cities in the world and it was registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
It bears witness to the Najdi architectural style, which is specific to the center of the Arabian peninsula. The walls have decorative triangular windows designed to recirculate air and bring natural light into the rooms. The materials used for construction were mud bricks, straw, and logs of wood. The clay from which the bricks were made was extracted from underground soil layers.
One of the historical landmarks in Al-Turaif District is Salwa Palace that forms an integrated architectural system with its residential, administrative, cultural, and religious units. "Salwa" means solace or comfort in Arabic, is the largest single structure in Ad Diriyah. Salwa Palace was the residence and first home of the Al Saud Amirs and Imams during the First Saudi State.
One of the specifics of the Palace is decorative triangular windows designed to recirculate air and bring natural light into the rooms.
I will continue the series dedicated to the Saudi Arabian architecture. The next city I will share with you will be Jeddah - city where you can find beautiful traditional homes.
